Emotional intelligence is an extremely important factor in decision making. Emotional intelligence deals with the ability to be aware of one's own emotions and recognize others as well. You should also be able to anticipate the impact of such an element on decision making. One must possess the quality of recognizing others and one’s own emotional capacities to be able to become a good leader.

Developing one's emotional intelligence will help the person in tackling his/her emotions. An emotionally intelligent person will never lose track of his/her thoughts and will not crumble under pressure since he/she will be capable of handling them in a better way. In our work places, we come across such people everyday and we wonder how they can manage such stressful situations masterfully. The reason behind being a successful decision maker is to be aware of one’s own self and also be aware of the feelings of others. Thus, the better you are able to respond to the emotional needs, the better decision maker you are.

Knowledge of the salient features of emotional intelligence or EI will help in the making of a good leader. The features include self awareness, self regulation, social skills, motivation and empathy. When you will be able to gauge the needs of others, you will have the power to manage your employees. The capability of decision making is indispensible in a leader. EI is of immense help in such a circumstance.

Not many of us are born with this kind of ability. Mostly you will need to hone your skill. In order to improve your emotional intelligence, start by being a good observer. Study your reactions to different incidents. Try to find out whether you are judgmental or whether you are capable of thinking out of the box. Emotional Intelligence not only takes into consideration self awareness, but also considers how much receptive you are. A very important part of decision making is to be more open to others perspectives.

Evaluate yourself from time and time and see if you are able to empathize with others. This is extremely important in decision making. This is an art and with practice you will be able to master the art of decision making through emotional intelligence.
