Activities That Promote Self Esteem
Self Esteem is a person's evaluation of themselves and their own worth. There is a lot of discussion about both high and low self esteem and a great deal of research into how to achieve it. One of the significant things about self esteem is that it can be improved and maintained. |
Consequently numerous activities and techniques have been studied and developed to assist with the improvement of self esteem. Listed below are some of these suggestions.
- Look at the positive: Positive thinking has been proved as a very successful tool improving happiness and self esteem. Think positive about situations and soon you will start to feel positive.
- Be decisive: Indecision and procrastination hinder achievement and an opportunity to move forward. Achievement is something else that has close links with feelings of satisfaction. When we feel that we are achieving, our self worth and therefore self esteem improves.
- Be pro-active: Pro-active behavior brings about change. Self esteem is often low when we find ourselves in situations we are not happy with, but feel helpless in changing. By taking control and actively seeking ways to change them, we improve our self esteem
- Accept yourself for who you are: Part of achieving high self esteem is accepting you, qualities and faults. Try not to compare yourself with others, and rather than feeling failure or frustration with those you consider your faults, apply a positive approach to finding ways to improve them.
- Practice positive behavior and body language: Firm decisive body language gives the impression of confidence. The more we mimic behaviors associated with confidence, the more confident we will generally feel. Maintain eye contact in conversation, give a firm handshake, make sure that the things you do and say are made like you really mean them.
- Block out thoughts of failure: The more we concentrate on our own failure, the more we become consume by it and the more it will ebb away at our self esteem. Try not to dwell on thoughts such as these, but instead turn your thoughts to achievement and success
At times these activities might feel hard to achieve, but the key to improving one's self esteem is perseverance. And if one perseveres and achieves, the rewards will be even greater.
